The human imagination is a marvelous thing; it can conjure monstrosities of all shapes and sizes, horrifying beasts that haunt ever shadow, every dark room. It is the stuff of the imagination which becomes the stuff of nightmares, creatures which send small children to their parents’ rooms in the middle of the night. And it is these beasts which are banished by the coming sun, or even a friendly light; sent back to the world of fantasy from which they came. But what humans do not realize, is that it is the light which is the true fantasy; the things that go bump in the night do not flee with the coming of the sun. The human imagination, that marvelous thing, can conjure peace as well as beasts, and long has it hidden the general populace from the horrifying truths of the world, a world seen only by the hunters, shielded from it all by revenge-driven sociopaths who protect them all at the cost of normality.
But all good things come to an end, and the fantasy has begun to crumble. It started with the cracking of the demon gate, the release of the demons, and the domino effect could only hasten the effects. Demons, emboldened by their numbers, no longer hide themselves so carefully, and their comrades of the night needed only to follow that example. The hunters, long having fought an uphill war, stood no chance at stopping this advance; they could not hide the evidence, shield the innocent; and so the monsters which hunted only in dreams now hunt in open daylight, known to all to be a reality. No longer are the hunters crazed murderers, blamed for the crimes of the monsters they fight; no, instead they have become heroes, protectors sorely needed by an unprepared populace fighting creatures they know nothing about.
And so, in one fell swoop, war began. Religious zealots, bitter gun-owners, racial supremists, and extremists of all kinds immediately called for the extermination of these unnatural beasts. And even the tolerant of people soon followed the example, when brothers and sisters, or cousins, or children, or parents began to fall to the unrepressed hunting of these supernatural denizens. Militias began to form, and men and women seeking revenge turn to the hunters for training, preparing themselves to protect their families against these monstrosities. Suddenly facing an army they never expected could form from the fragile creatures they consider prey, the denizens of the night have been forced into unofficial truce, a fragile alliance formed by a need to face an enemy larger in number than any one of their species. Species which have ignored each other until this point now offer aid to one another, albeit grudgingly, forming a formidable front to resist the attempts at extermination the humans send their way.
Now facing an enemy slowly fabricating organization, some humans begin to lose heart; this was not what they expected. These creatures are mindless killers, animals and no better; they expected to crush an enemy that would tear itself apart once cornered, not to face a motley alliance resisting their advances. Doubt sets in, and many humans expect the worse: the humans will lose, and be wiped out. They doubt their own abilities to protect themselves and their families, and they doubt the hunters; and so, they turn elsewhere. Humans begin turning to the demons and the vampires and all other sentient races of the supernatural hordes, seeking protection wherever deals can be made, hoping to ensure their safety when the humans lose.
This war has suddenly become all the more complicated; the sides are no longer so easily determined. And so the struggle continues. Pick a side and join the fight; will you wipe out all unnatural beasts, or cleanse the world of the weakling humans? Will you struggle to protect a family in these terrifying times, or Rambo into the action? This time, war has literally become Hell; how will you survive the heat?
